Commonly known as just Freiburg, Freiburg im Breisgau is equally popular under a different name: the Jewel of the Black Forest. Located at the foot of the Schlossberg hill in the Baden region, the city is best known for its 15th-century university and local vineyards.
Popular for its high quality of living and serving as an entry point to the beautiful Black Forest, Freiburg is the sunniest and warmest city in Germany. The inner city is crossed by plenty of charming canals and if you happen to fall or step into one, the locals say you will marry a Freiburger, so be warned!
Don’t miss the stunning Münster cathedral with famous gargoyles and a tower with spectacular views. It’s built with the red sandstone popular in the area, similar to that used in the Gothic Historical Merchants Hall, also worth a visit.
Strolling down the city’s charming streets is a very pleasurable experience and you can stop in one of the many cosy cafés and little restaurants and enjoy a glass of the local wine or a pint of German beer.

A beautiful old town with excellent restaurants, shops,...
A beautiful old town with excellent restaurants, shops, bakeries and cosy bars. Small enough to walk around its cobble streets with quant little streams and easy to explore further with a very good public transport system and cycle lanes as is usual for Germany. The wooded hills that surround the town are a joy to walk in and offer great views. The stunning gothic cathedral tower of lattice stonework is well worth the many steps for the views. A picturesque tram and bus ride takes you to the Schauinslandbahn cable car to explore the black forest mountains around Feldberg. Hard to navigate the walks up there though as the maps and signs are confusing so easy to get lost without a phone. On a rainy day a great value museum day ticket gets you into all the museums for one price. One of the main old landmarks, the Martinstor gate tower is sadly ruined by the huge Mcdonalds sign on the side. Why was this allowed, like putting a coke cola sign on the Eifel tower.

Freiburg has so much history and a beautiful shopping district with a lot of restaurants very close to transportation. The food is amazing and it is so easy to get around in Freiburg. The people are so kind and very helpful. It is very important that you remember that all shops are closed on Sundays, with the exception of most restaurants. Be sure to have Euros on hand for this day, as a lot of places do not use credit cards. Check out City Park and get awesome views of the city from the tower, easily located by taking Landwasser to the fourth stop at Am Bischofskreuz. It's behind the Studentensiedlung am Seepark or the "Stussie," which is student housing for Freiburg. You have to try the tea and delights at the Turkish bakery, Sevgin. It is just a short walk from the main train station. You will not be disappointed.

Freiburg is a very nice city with a beautiful cathedral in the main square. There are a lot of pubs, restaurants and typical German breweries where everyone can find the original taste of southern Germany. Very good nightlife. The city is located at the border of the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) which is really worth to visit.

The hotel is much bigger than I anticipated and therefore very well organised. The rooms are generous, light and clean - the air condition was very welcome as it was extremely hot! We enjoyed the lovely shaded garden and pool a lot. The restaurant was closed on the night we were there and the receptionist was extremely helpful in finding and booking us a table somewhere else for dinner. You should be aware that the hotel is slightly outside Freiburg. The centre is easily reached by tram (20min) or within 10 minutes by car.
Breakfast spread was great with the option of waffle grill and fresh fruits. Rooms were clean. Parking at the hotel is expensive at EUR15 per night. I think these should be built into the price of the rooms to avoid hassle. The hotel is 2.5kms away from Freiburg centrum/Bahn. The front desk is great and available 24x7. My 7 year old daughter woke up mid-night hungry and we walked down to the front desk/Bar, who were happy to make a Pizza for her at 1am. She was very happy :-)
The hotel is in a Lovely historical building in 5 minutes walging distance of the city centre of freiburg, but the rooms could definitely use some upgrade, they lokken like there was nothing done in 20 years, the shower was broken, the floor was full of cracks the bed was not comfortabel, also the diner at the restaurant was very dissapointing. But the breakfast was ok
I had 2 extended stays at the zum Schiff. The January stay was much more leisurely and relaxed as the hotel was quieter. During the second, peak season, stay, the staff were at times seeming overwhelmed and busy. But it is still an excellent place to stay in Freiburg. And the food in the restaurant is excellent, the house wine excellent, and the breakfasts excellent.
This hotel gave us a large, nicely decorated room with ensuite bathroom. It was chosen due to proximity to a meeting the next morning, but is a bit outside of Freiburg am Breisgau. There is a restaurant in the building which was very nice for dinner. Parking was free. The building was reminiscent of the older German hotels, but it was in great shape.
The hotel/restaurant is located relatively close to the center of Freiburg. The food at the restaurant was delicious and the waiters very friendly. My room was simple but had all I needed for one night stay. The bed was very comfortable. In the room was a water boiler for coffee or tea. The quality of the tea was good. A place I will stay again.
Pleasant, clean, well-equipped, and decorated thoughtfully. I hadn't heard of the place before, but it certainly beats any hotel stay in the same price bracket by far. It feels like home, you can do whatever you like, whenever you like, and have space to not have to work in your bedroom. Very friendly and helpful staff.
I had a wonderful experience at Novotel hotel in Freiburg. It was very close to the Freiburg Train station, for me it’s very convenient to take a tour in the city, also not far from the city center. The service was quite good when I arrived hotel on the first day.
I love it and will highly recommend to others!
Stadthotel Freiburg has an excellent location; 3-5 minutes walk to the old city center and the main shopping street. Room was big enough. The café across the street belongs to the same hotel group and is open 24 hours. Our stay was good value for money and the hotel well deserves its 3-star status.
Very comfortable hotel, nice spacious rooms and the location is brilliant with a beautiful view of the black forest. I like the concept of apartment-hotels as it makes us feel like we're at home.
Great hotel in terms of what you get for the price if you are travelling in Schwarzwald/Freiburg area. Rooms are modern as shown in the photos. The breakfast is very good for a 3-star hotel.
Room size was good and not too small. Everything was clean and the staff was very friendly. The bus starts directly in front of the hotel. Breakfast buffet was good and tasty.
-location for Christmas market in Freiburg was great.
-valet was a huge plus (27 euro/day)
-helped with luggage into room
-quick room service and cleaning
-very clean!!
